29 September 11 AM | online & in Brussels | In English & German languages
Russia’s War on Ukraine and its consequences for the EU
Discussing options for the present and the future
Eight months after Russia’s invasion of Ukraine and the launch of a new era for the EU’s Foreign, Security and Defence policy, the round table aims to assess potential scenarios of the Russian aggression.
Furthermore, it shall analyse the impacts on the transatlantic partnership, on the implementation of newly adopted Strategic Compass and on the future of the European Defence Union – taking into account considerable budgetary increase for defence capabilities both at national (Germany, France, Italy) and European level (through the Multiannual Financial Framework MFF).
Last but not least, the EDRT will look at the impacts of the sanctions and counter-sanctions, including soaring inflation, supply chain disruptions and food and energy shortages, and their possible consequences for workers, citizens and businesses in Europe.
CESI invites experts, policy makers, representatives of the personnel of armed forces and interested shareholders and stakeholders in Europe to reflect and exchange on the following questions:
· How might the war further evolve and what are current and future strategies for the EU and its allies?
· Will the war in Ukraine further speed up the European efforts to achieve a European Defence Union?
· How can the EU position itself as a global player while maintaining its strong economic and welfare model?
With the participation of:
· Klaus Heeger, Secretary General, CESI
· Elena Lazarou, Head of Unit, European Parliament Research Service
· MEP Lukas Mandl, Vice-Chair of the European Parliament Subcommittee on Security and Defence
· Thomas Sohst, German Armed Forces Association (DBwV), President of CESI´s Commission ‘Defence’
· Fabian Zuleeg, Chief Executive of the European Policy Center
*CESI’s European Defence Round Table (EDRT) aims at including more key players and stakeholders in the processes of the Common Security and Defence Policy.
