Gabriella Brigitte Klein is a Professor of Linguistics (L/LIN-01) in Italy, teaching ‘Sociolinguistics’ and ‘Dynamics of Social Communication’ at the Department of Humanities and Education of the State University of Perugia. She conducts research in the area of Sociolinguistics: language policy, urban sociolinguistics, and conversation analysis. She also acts as communication trainer in the field of adult education specialising in interpersonal and intercultural communication within work settings. She is transnational coordinator of LLP-Grundtvig projects which all focus on intercultural communication within institutional contexts: SPICES (Social Promotion of Intercultural Communication Expertise and Skills 224945-CP-1-2005-1-IT-GRUNDTVIG-G11) resulting in the creation of an innovative training methodology for trainers (Gabriella B. Klein, ed.: SPICES GUIDELINES. A training methodology for intercultural communication in institutional settings. Perugia: Key & Key Communications, 2007, translated in Bulgarian, German, Italian, Slovene, Spanish) was honoured with the Italian Label Europeo 2006 and a Silver Award for best practices in ‘Quality in Mobility’ in 2008. SPICES fed into the successor projects e-SPICES (electronic Social Promotion of Intercultural Communication Expertise and Skills - 2008-1-IT2-GRU06-00547-1) and the currently running BRIDGE-IT (Be Relevant to Intercultural Diversity Generation in Europe – Integration Team 510101-LLP-1-2010-1-IT-GRUNDTVIG-GMP) whose aim is to create online tools for ‘adults-in-mobility’ and civil servants to help overcome intercultural communication barriers.
